Academic Year 2022/2023

This module focuses on the political systems and policy drivers that underpin international development through sport. It examines international governmental and non-governmental structures and agencies that co-ordinate and contribute to sport-for-development projects in Global North and Global South contexts. Students will acquire an understanding of national and international case studies pertaining to sport and peacebuilding, displacement, education and health promotion. The module also examines the strategies and complexities of using sport for social development and the challenges of managing sport-for-development programmes.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Understand the role of government policies and political systems in driving international development through sport.
2. Critically assess the contribution of sport and physical activity in an international development context in relation to politics, health promotion, social issues, education and conflict resolution.
3. Analyse the contributions of non-governmental organisations and educational institutions in coordinating sport-based development and peacebuilding initiatives.
4. Examine sport-for-development case studies implemented in complex international environments.
5. Critically assess the challenges and strategies of agencies involved in the management of sport-for-development.
6. Develop a programme to use sport to support the integration of displaced people.
