SMGT30030 Enterprise and Development

The course introduces students to entrepreneurship and enterprise development as well as fundamental entrepreneurial issues, such as what enterprise development is and why it is important. The course then progresses through three main sections: developing the business idea; towards start-up; start-up and beyond. The main objective of the course is to encourage students to ultimately apply their entrepreneurial skills in a practical way, either in an existing organisation (intrapreneurship); through setting up their own business (entrepreneurship) or through various business support organisations.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:

(i) outline the importance of entrepreneurship and small businesses to the Irish economy;
(ii) outline the methods for finding and analysing business ideas;
(iii) describe the key steps involved in starting up a small business;
(iv) describe the key sections of a business plan;
(v) describe the key issues involved in running and growing a business;
(vi) outline sources of assistance for business start-up, both financial and non-financial;
(vii) describe entrepreneurship in different contexts.
