SMGT20080 Sports Work Placement

Academic Year 2022/2023

This module is designed to provide students with work placement experience in external sports organisations and businesses. This module will encourage and enable students to assume greater responsibility for the planning and evaluation of their own learning. The internship is for a period of 10 weeks in the Summer trimester. During this period students are expected to conform to the normal working hours of the host company and complete a minimum of 350 hours work experience.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:

(i) increase student awareness of the broader environment of sport;
(ii) develop new and employment-related skills and gain an understanding of how a sports organisation is managed;
(iii) work independently and as part of a team within the parameters of the agreed work plan and time-scale;
(iv) understand the link between academic development and workplace requirements;
(v) make a reasoned self-assessment of personal and academic capabilities.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
The work placement takes place in the summer semester for a period of 10 weeks commencing in mid-May and finishing in late July. Students are not permitted to complete their placement outside of these dates without permission from the Module Co-ordinator. During this period students are expected to conform to the normal working hours of the host company and complete a minimum of 350 hours work experience.
