SMGT10290 Sport Mega Events

Academic Year 2022/2023

This module seeks to introduce mega sport events, their management, and impacts using the examples of the Olympic and Paralympic Games and men's and women's FIFA World Cups. It will equip students with skills to retrieve, manage references and evaluate academic sources on mega sport events. The module aims to build an understanding of a) the origins and contemporary significance of these events b) their governance and ownership structures c) management processes involved with bidding and hosting them d) the multifaceted impacts of mega sport events on various stakeholders during the event life cycle and e) mega events and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:

(i) Use UCD library databases, the Olympic World Library and the FIFA museum catalogue to search for mega sport event specific literature.
(ii) Use Endnote to retrieve, archive and cite references.
(iii) Describe the history, values, growth, and socio-cultural significance of mega sport events.
(iv) Debate the roles mega sport events play in modern society, in national and international politics, in urban development and the economy.
(v) Define the roles of key stakeholders involved in mega sport event bidding and production (owners, national and local government, city planners, organising committees, athletes, sport federations, sport officials, sponsors, the media, host businesses, communities, others in the supply chain).
(vi) Identify project management processes involved with hosting mega sport events (host city contracts, marketing and promotion, HRM management, performance management, legacy planning).
(vii) Discuss the typology of impacts of mega sport events. The geographical and temporal dimensions of impacts.
(viii) Use examples of past events to identify the UN SDG that are supported or undermined by mega sport event hosting.
(ix) Identify the sustainability reporting methods used by mega event owners and hosts.

Indicative Module Content:

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
The module utilizes a teaching and learning approach which places students at the center of the learning experience, promoting a collaborative and interactive learning process. Students have the opportunity to actively engage and learn during the module through seminar class discussions, seminar class-based group work and reflective learning. The teaching via face-to-face lectures will be augmented by relevant podcasts.
