SMGT10260 Core Academic Skills for Sport Studies

Academic Year 2022/2023

This module introduces students to a wide range of academic skills that are required to successfully study at university. Students learn how to extract meaning from lectures, take notes and tackle academic readings. They are introduced to the library and research strategies, academic writing (essays and reports) and referencing. Finally, students learn how to work effectively in groups, how to prepare and deliver oral presentations and how to study for exams.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

(i) understand the nature of university education and students' role in independent learning;
(ii) apply various methods of note-taking from lectures, seminars and research sources;
(iii) search effectively for resources and information in the University Library;
(iv) reference sources appropriately using the Harvard system;
(v) present research findings using and appropriate writing style and assignment format;
(vi) critically review sources of information and knowledge;
(vii) design and deliver oral and visual presentations using technological aids where appropriate;
(viii) work together in formal and informal groups;
(ix) effectively prepare for formal examinations.
