The opportunity of a professional science experience is offered to students over a 6-10 week Summer period. The aim of this module is to give students the opportunity to develop an understanding of how Science operates in a professional industrial environment and how theory presented in modules translates to practice. Placements may vary considerably but in general terms students will work in industrial or non-academic research environments where they will obtain a breadth of practical experience to complement their degree programme. Work placements are available subject to suitability and availability, queries can be directed to scienceinternships@ucd.ie
These should be discussed with the School coordinator in advance. Students apply for these placements and may be offered interviews by the placement providers. Students may alternatively source their own placements on the advice of the module coordinator. A member of the academic staff will be appointed to liaise with the student during the period of their work placement. The member of academic staff will maintain contact with the student and the student's supervisor within the placement organization to ensure that the student is meeting the learning outcomes associated with the module.
Assessment will take place on completion of the placement and submission of reports from both the student and employer. The module will be assessed as Pass/Fail. Successful completion of the module will result in a module grade P which will be grade point neutral. An unsuccessful attempt at the module will be awarded an F or an NG giving a grade point of 1.0 or 0 respectively. Failure to meet the learning outcomes associated with this module represents grounds for failure.

Learning Outcomes:

Students will be expected to: (1) Understand how theory developed in lectures is applied. (2) Develop their understanding of scientific methodologies and the ability to apply them in the workplace. (3) Understand health and safety issues in a working environment, where relevant. (4) Understand the need for high ethical standards in the practice of science. (5) Act independently and manage time effectively. (6) Demonstrate inter-personal occupational skills and competence in teamwork and interpersonal communications. (7) Demonstrate critical reflection on their learning and their activities during placement.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Students will attend workshop sessions in preparation for the placement.

Students will make written application to their chosen participating employers, and will attend interviews as required.

Students are based with the host employer for the 6-10 weeks duration of the placement.

Students will actively engage in projects which are being undertaken by the host employer.

Students prepare a report on their professional placement. Feedback may be received from the employer and/or academic staff member prior to summative assessment. Students may also receive oral or written feedback from the employer over the course of their placement.
