SBUS46040 Collaborative Communications

This module will focus on building trust, connection and collective effectiveness between colleagues, teams and organisations. The work is underpinned by Gestalt theory, aspects of the theory of High-Performance Teams (HPT) and Marshall Rosenberg’s Nonviolent Communication framework. Gestalt, the foundation of best-in-class organisational development and coaching programmes, provides a robust approach to relationality while Nonviolent Communication provides a structure that is supportive and pragmatic enabling participants to make real changes in their listening and communication. The overarching focus is to bring a more relational approach to your teams and groups.

On the first day, we will introduce Patrick Lencioni’s theories of High-Performance Teams to discover what are your strengths and growing edges in your teams and leadership. The key concepts are introduced by experiential structures in dyads, triads and groups using a minimum of theory. Nonviolent Communication represents a paradigm shift in communication so experiencing the effect of this approach is key. The second day will concentrate on practical applications. We will show how you can empower your effectiveness to help you build deeper, more effective connections.

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

● How to manage your “buttons” getting pressed in challenging situations
● Learning deep listening skills to understand the true concerns that often lie behind words

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
The module has a detailed study guide. Students are required to complete the module pre-reading or pre-work prior to attending the seminar sessions. The sessions themselves will be a combination of lectures, group discussion, in-class presentations, case study discussions and classroom exercises. A heavy emphasis in the seminars is on teasing out the implications of theory for practical application in a workplace context.
