This module is designed for radiographers working in the area of interventional radiology. It aims to provide students with an in depth knowledge of the procedures provided by interventional radiology. There will be a systematic approach to discussing the interventional procedures currently performed in Irish hospitals focussing on promoting both professional knowledge and quality of service in the interventional radiology environment. This module aims to develop each students knowledge and understanding of the aetiology of the disease processes that present in the IR department, their compatibility with radiological intervention, the possible procedural risks and complications and the expected outcomes for each patient. It will demonstrate the integration and application of pharmacologiacl agents, medical devices, imaging procedures and technologies in the treatment and management of disease.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module, the student should be able to:
1. Competently discuss a wide range of procedural aspects of interventional procedures within the context of service provision and patient outcomes.
2. Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the pharmacological agents and the medical devices used in the interventional environment used.
3. Competently integrate information from a range of sources including the referring physician, the patient's past medical history and previous radiographic examinations.
4. Demonstrate a personal and professional ability to understand the care necessary for patients undergoing a range of interventional procedures.
5. Apply this knowledge to working practice within the clinical environment in order to uphold and improve standards of quality, service and professionalism in the interventional radiology environment.
6. Critically reflect on the advantages of using interventional radiology to develop and improve the quality of service provision in the Imaging Department

This module is open to Radiographers with a BSc Radiography or equivalent working in the interventional suite of the radiology department.
