The aims of this module are to:
1. Introduce students to the research process.
2. Guide students critical appreciation of effective research.
3. Equip students to undertake critical evidence-based practice.

Syllabus
The module explores the process and assimilation of research through consideration of: effective literature searching and its critical analysis; formulation of a research question and development of a research strategy; application of valid and rigorous scientific methodologies; implications of selected statistical concepts to data acquisition and analysis; and presentation of research through formal writing and oral presentation.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this module, the student should:
• Understand, describe and critically analyse current radiography and health sciences research and its applicability to clinical practice, with the ability to define evidence based practice
• Refine literature searching skills and develop their ability to evaluate and critique current literature
• Understand key concepts in research design and methodologies, together with their advantages and disadvantages.
• Appreciate ethical issues in conducting different types of research and the potential implications to the research process
• Develop an in-depth understanding and be able critically analyse information sources and peer reviewed journals
• Develop an appreciation of research integrity
• Develop their critical writing, scientific presentation and referencing skills
• Understand basic statistical concepts for design and analysis of research
• Understand the principles of evidence-based practice and apply them to critically read, evaluate, and use research papers to support informed practice decisions.
• Adopt a career-long, critical and positive approach to published research as the basis for evidence based good practice.

Indicative Module Content:

In this module students will cover research design; principles of qualitative and quantitative research; ethics in research; research analysis; research integrity; referencing; specific research areas and methodologies relevant to their course.
