RDGY30710 Current Issues in Healthcare

Academic Year 2023/2024

This module will support the research of a range of contemporary issues in Healthcare which while largely focusing on Ireland will cover many topics of importance to any healthcare system. Topics will be drawn from areas such as: Healthcare in Ireland and Service Delivery; One Health; Sláintecare; Behaviour Change; The Environment and Sustainability; Equality & Diversity; Values based Radiography; Radiography Research Dissemination and Child Protection. Students will be guided through lectures which will be interspersed with problem-based learning (PBL) sessions. The student assessment comprises of various elements.

PBL Diary (30%)
This will be individually completed by students and is worth 30% of the overall module grade.
Students will study 3 PBL topics. As each PBL session completes students will submit their diary for the PBL work they have performed. The first PBL dairy will be reviewed and team feedback will be provided. The remaining 2 PBL research diaries will each carry 15% of the overall module, these will be graded. In the diary the students will write about the skills and knowledge they learned from the PBL session, citing references and reading material they reviewed in their research and they will describe what they gained from the sourced material, their contribution to the group and how their PBL teamwork could be enhanced.

PBL Group Presentation (10%)
Each student group will deliver 1 PowerPoint presentation. The group presentations will be divided between the 2nd and 3rd PBL questions. The duration of the presentation will be 10 minutes. This will be a group mark worth 10%. The lecturers will allocate which group is presenting in which week.

Written Assignment (50%)
In week 5 the students will be provided with a number of themes and and students will be required to identify a topic within that theme and complete an individual 2000 word (+/-10%) extended piece of writing following research of the topic.

Abstract / Executive Summary (10%)
The student will be requested to write an individual 250 word abstract/ executive summary along the lines of a scientific abstract which will form an overview of the topic researched for the written assignment. This will be worth 10% and submitted with the written assignment.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
The module will guide students in assimilating research knowledge and skills associated with a range of contemporary healthcare issues.
On successful completion of the module, students should:
Demonstrate an understanding of:
- researching a range of contemporary healthcare issues together with the potential impact on their future professional careers;
- approaches to analysing, critiquing published research papers, reports, and professional guidelines;
- the value of reflection in building personal problem-solving capacity;
- approaches to preparing for informal and formal presentations and workplace-based teaching sessions;
- develop and structure a theoretical argument supported by a critical review of literature and synthesise available evidence;
- evaluate the significance and clinical importance of some of these issues to their future professional careers presented through descriptive dialogue;
- research material and be able to articulate information and conclusions logically and coherently in written and oral presentation.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT OUTCOMES
The module aims to encourage students’ development as effective members of the healthcare team.
On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
- employ teamwork skills as part of a PBL group;
- achieve specified tasks within given time limits;
- reflect on personal knowledge and understanding, and identify approaches to improve and develop their knowledge and understanding;
- make informed choices and take responsibility for working independently and within groups;
- enter professional discussion concerning specified healthcare issues;
- evaluate the module content in the context of the relevance to their future professional practice;
- adopt a career-long, evidence-based, critical and positive approach to a broad range of healthcare issues.

Indicative Module Content:

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
A series of topics will be introduced on a weekly basis, together with some directed readings. Selected topics will be addressed through a series of problem-based learning sessions, research report writing, and student presentations. . Approaches to teaching and learning will include: problem-based learning; active/task-based learning; peer and group work; lectures; research writing and student presentations.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Feedforward will be given to students for their initial PBL diary entries which can be used to assist their submissions with the 2 remaining PBL diary submissions. Group feedback will be given following the PBL presentations.. Post-assessment feedback will be given for the individual research written assignment and the abstract executive summary.
