This module will explore a range of contemporary issues in Healthcare which while largely focusing on Ireland will cover many topics of importance to any healthcare system. Topics such as: Healthcare in Ireland, Sláintecare, Service Delivery, Behaviour Change, Quality Management, Accreditation and Standards, Open Disclosure, Effective Communication, Patient Information, Patient Safety, Public and Patient Involvement, Artificial Intelligence, Values-Based Practice, and Introductory Teaching Skills will be covered. Students will be guided through lectures which will be interspersed with problem-based learning (PBL) sessions. Directed readings will be provided for each of the topics to facilitate these PBL sessions.

Learning Outcomes:

LEARNING OUTCOMES
The module will guide students in assimilating knowledge and skills associated with a range of contemporary healthcare issues.
On successful completion of the module, students should:
Demonstrate an understanding of:
- a range of contemporary healthcare issues together with the potential impact on their future professional careers;
- approaches to analysing published papers, reports, and professional guidelines;
- the value of reflection in building personal problem-solving capacity;
- approaches to preparing for informal and formal presentations and workplace-based teaching sessions;
- develop and structure a theoretical argument supported by a critical review of literature and available evidence;
- evaluate the significance and clinical importance of some of these issues to their future professional careers presented through descriptive dialogue;
- articulate information and conclusions logically and coherently in written and oral presentation.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT OUTCOMES
The module aims to encourage students’ development as effective members of the healthcare team.
On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
- employ teamwork skills as part of a PBL group;
- achieve specified tasks within given time limits;
- reflect on personal knowledge and understanding, and identify approaches to improve and develop their knowledge and understanding;
- make informed choices and take responsibility for working independently and within groups;
- enter professional discussion concerning specified healthcare issues;
- evaluate the module content in the context of the relevance to their future professional practice;
- adopt a career-long, evidence-based, critical and positive approach to a broad range of healthcare issues.

Indicative Module Content:

In this module you'll consider a range of issues of contemporary issues in healthcare generally and Irish healthcare specifically.

A series of topics will be introduced on a weekly basis, together with some directed readings. Students will then be presented with authentic problems which they must as a group find solutions to being cognisant of current literature and professional guidelines. Topics will then be discussed through a series of PBL tutorials / sessions. Topics such as: Healthcare in Ireland, Sláintecare, Service Delivery, Behaviour Change, Quality Management, Accreditation and Standards, Open Disclosure, Effective Communication, Patient Information, Patient Safety, Public and Patient Involvement, Artificial Intelligence, Values-Based Practice, and Introductory Teaching Skills will be covered.

The aims are to provide students with the opportunity to discuss, and critique, issues of importance to their future professional practice.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
A series of topics will be introduced on a weekly basis, together with some directed readings. Selected topics will be addressed through a series of problem-based learning sessions. Approaches to teaching and learning will include: problem-based learning; active/task-based learning; peer and group work; lectures; critical writing; debates; case-based learning; and student presentations.

Feedback will be provided to the group as a whole, post-assessment, for the critical essay component. Individual student feedback will also be available at this point. Similarly, feedback will be provided to groups / individual students on the PBL topics throughout the trimester.
