This module provides opportunities for students to develop a range of clinical competencies appropriate to a newly qualified radiographer. In clinical departments, final year students will be expected to work competently in all sections of the Imaging Department, under the distant supervision of clinical staff, who will monitor each students progress, assist with specific difficulties and help the individual develop confidence. Each student must keep an reflective portfolio of their clinical work in final year. Full attendance at clinical placement is compulsary and any missed clinical placement time must be rectified as per CORU requirements.

All aspects of clinical placement align with the CORU Standards of Proficiency. The CORU Standards of Proficiency detail the skills and abilities that student radiographers must possess in order to enter the CORU register on graduation. They are the threshold standards deemed necessary by the registration board at the level of entry to practice.
Clinical placement across the four Stages of the BSc Radiography programme addresses varying ‘Standards of Proficiency’ under the six domains: professional autonomy and accountability, interpersonal and professional relationships, effective communication, personal and professional development; provision of quality services; knowledge, understanding and skills.
The CORU Standards of Proficiency are available at: https://www.coru.ie/files-recognition/standards-of-proficiency-for-radiographers-radiation-therapists.pdf

- Competently perform a wide range of general and specialised radiographic examinations within the context of professional
guidelines and current legislation.
- Select, justify and optimise appropriate projections and techniques for a range of commonly encountered clinical indications
and patient presentations ensuring appropriate radiation protective measures are applied.
- Adapt technique depending on the patient presentation and clinical environment.
- Accurately evaluate image quality and radiographc outcomes
- Demonstrate knowledge of radiographic pathologies encountered.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the range of modalities within a modern imaging department and their appropriate application to particular pathologies or anatomical areas.
- Critically evaluate the utility of imaging examinations to patient management.
- Demonstration professionalism, effective teamwork and communication in all interactions with patients and clinical staff
- Demonstrate personal ability to care for patients appropriately during all examinations as per clinical policy.
- Critically reflect on their performance and experiences in clinical practice.

Requirements, Exclusions and Recommendations
Learning Requirements:

Full attendance at clinical placement is compulsory and any missed clinical placement time must be rectified as per CORU and departmental requirements.
Attendance at the ‘Compulsory Clinical Entry’ (CCE) lecture is mandatory for this module. This lecture is designed to introduce students to life in the clinical department specific to their stage. Students who fail to attend will be required to undertake an individual discussion session with the module coordinator, before they are allowed to attend clinical placement. Failure to attend the CCE lecture may inevitably result in a delay to the start of the student’s clinical placement. All clinical days missed must be remediated.
In line with departmental policy, students who do not complete the module placements within the prescribed clinical placement period will be scheduled for Clinical Recovery Placements to facilitate students in the completion of the clinical placement requirements. The ‘Clinical Recovery Placements’ will, in agreement with supervising practice tutors, be scheduled within the clinical environment. This may involve clinical placement during university holiday periods. Progression to the next stage is not normally allowed if the clinical modules required in each stage of the programme are not completed prior to the start of the next academic session.
Compulsory programme requirements must be completed in advance of clinical placement including- garda vetting certification, manual handling certification, ‘Children First’ certification, ‘Hand Hygiene’ certification and ‘Basic Life Support’ certification. Students must comply with the UCD Radiography vaccinations policy and fully comply with programme requirements.
Students who fail to attend or fail to achieve a pass in either ‘Basic Life Support’ or ‘Manual Handling’ will have to re-take these components and reach a pass before entering the clinical environment. This may incur a cost to the student.
All UCD-specified HSELand courses that are assigned per stage must be completed and passed in advance of clinical placement.
During clinical placement, students are expected to abide by the ‘UCD Student Code of Conduct’ and any other clinical departmental policies and procedures. Any breach of these matters may result in the student being placed on the ‘UCD Fitness to Practice’ pathway.
Full guidance relating to the regulations on clinical placement is available in the ‘UCD Clinical Placement Student Handbook’.
Candidates must achieve at least 100% attendance at clinical placements and any missed clinical placement time must be rectified as per CORU and departmental requirements. Students must successfully complete relevant specified learning activities and assessments. Candidates not achieving the requisite attendance must undertake such clinical placement as is considered necessary to address the deficit.

Students have not yet started the module. They will do so in April 2025. Much of this infomration is known to the students, but it will be emphasised to them in thier CCP (compulsory clinical entry) talk.
