RDGY20230 Radiation Protection

This module examines radiation protection relevant to diagnostic imaging, including: the physical and biological effects of exposure to ionising radiation; how dose is measured and monitored; the principles of radiation protection and their application in the clinical environment; and the regulation of the use ionising radiation. It also explores current questions and controversies in radiation protection and considers the role of the radiographer in clinical radiation protection.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Demonstrate a good understanding of the fundamentals of radiation biology, radiation effects, dose and risk
2. Understand the core principles of radiation protection and apply them to the clinical setting
3. Demonstrate a good understanding of the legislation and governance relating to radiation protection
4. Describe the principles and use of dosimetry and patient dose monitoring
5. Discuss roles, responsibilities and approaches to radiation protection in the hospital enviroment
6. Discuss topical issues relevant to clinical radiation protection
