Community-led local development (CLLD) is the term used to describe a community development approach that is based on 'bottom-up' development by local people and partners, rather than 'top-down' development by local and regional government. For example, the ‘LEADER method’ is considered one of the most systematic and widespread application of CLLD in Europe. This method places the rural community at its centre, while still working with agencies at all levels of government. In this module, we will explore CLLD as applied in rural areas in Ireland and Europe, as well as internationally. Students will have the opportunity to critically assess models of CLLD in their own home countries. Understanding the role of place-based, collaborative approaches and Just Transitions in rural community development will be central to this module.
