RDEV40730 Understanding the Family Farm Business

This module is a level 4 module and is an optional module for the Masters in Agricultural Extension and Innovation. It may be available as an optional module to other postgraduate and undergraduate programmes on a case by case basis.

This module introduces students to the unique aspects of the family farm business. It is framed around the role of the family in the farm business and the traditional and emerging family structures around the farm. It will critically analyse the concepts of resilience, attachment to place and succession and inheritance in the family farm structure. It will also examine the role of advice and support as tailored to the unique aspects of a family farm.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students will be able to:
• Understand the unique aspects of a family farm business compared to other businesses
• Critically evaluate the role of the family in the farm business
• Examine the concept of resilience as it relates to family farming
• Understand the concept of attachment to place and how it relates to farming
• Understand the theory around farm succession and inheritance and the emerging farm structures such as collaborative
farming arrangements
• Evaluate how farm family businesses engage with knowledge and other support services

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Teaching based approaches will include active/task-based learning, peer and group work, and reflective learning. Lectures and additional group tasks will be provided through the virtual classroom.
