This is an undergraduate module designed for students of Agricultural Science, Food Science and Human Nutrition who are required to undertake professional work experience (PWE). It focuses on developing greater awareness and knowledge of health and safety issues related to agriculture, the food industry and associated areas. The agri-food sector faces the challenge of economic, environmental and social sustainability as the industry expands to meet global food demand. This module explores social sustainability through the lens of occupational safety and health. Content includes the work environment; the legal environment and health and safety legislation in Ireland; insurance; health and safety management and work systems; manual handling; chemical safety and other psycho-social hazards; health and welfare. The module will also contain a training component related to Agricultural Science Programme Majors.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module students should be able to: 1 Recognise major risk areas related to agriculture, food and related areas. 2 Understand the legal requirements surrounding the workplace environment. 3 Conduct a risk assessment and assess the safety status of a workplace environment. 4 Be able to recognise incorrect procedures regarding the use of mechanical equipment. 5 Be able to assess the economic and social impact of health.
Passing this module is a requirement for Professional Work Experience.

Indicative Module Content:

Key topics that will be addressed include: work place fatalities and accidents; work place safety; legislation and insurance information; risk assessment; manual handling; health; chemical and laboratory safety and practical sessions.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module will be delivered via lectures and two practical sessions. On completion of the practical sessions students will undertake a project. Students are assessed on all aspects of the module.
