This module is part of the core curriculum for the MB Bch BAO degree in medicine. It builds on the knowledge, attitudes and skills acquired in MDSA 40040 / MDSA30300. These will be further developed through thematic teaching in Clinical Psychiatry, with an emphasis on diagnosis and management of psychiatric disorder and related topics such as stigma. Sub-specialties such as child and adolescent psychiatry and old age psychiatry will be incorporated into the teaching and will be taught using multimedia and other teaching methods. The module will be predominantly delivered in the Clinical Setting.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the module the student will be able to- describe and recognise common psychiatric conditions- demonstrate the clinical skills necessary to deliver appropriate psychiatric care- demonstrate effective problem solving using the biopsychosocial approach to clinical problems- develop the required professional attributes and communication skills consistent with becoming a reflective clinical practitioner - develop an awareness of the resources available in the mental health and related services- identify socio-cultural influences on mental health

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
• Small group tutorials to introduce key concepts and themes in Psychiatry.
• Experiential learning through clinical attachments to develop core clinical skills.
• Consolidation of these thematic understandings and identification of deficits in knowledge through further teaching sessions
(workshops and lectures).
