Curricular information is subject to change
On completion of this module, you should be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of experimental design in Behavioural Neuroscience
- Explain the effects of experimental design choices on the validity and reliability of a given experimental paradigm
- understand the strengths and weaknesses (common and specific) of EEG/ERP
- set up an EEG experiment (with supervision)
- Collect data using EEG in line with best practice guidelines
- Pre-process and analyse ERP data.
- Produce a clear and succinct laboratory report for an ERP study.
- Have an appreciation of the theory behind TMS and how it compares to EEG and other Cognitive Neuroscience techniques
-Understand the strengths and weaknesses of TMS
- Understand the basic elements of a TMS set up and be able to assist in a practical session.
This module will provide practical experience of conducting research using EEG/ERP
EEG/ERP will be introduced with a 3-hour theoretical lecture . Students will then collect data in the lab in pairs (in separate sessions), under the supervision of a demonstrator. Data will be collated and students will take part in analyses sessions before writing up the experiment.
For the second technique, TMS, there will be an introductory theory session. Following this there will be a group practical demonstration. Students will be required to submit answers to a set of questions to gauge their understanding of the technique.
