PSY40270 Ethics in Psychological Research

Academic Year 2022/2023

Consideration of ethical issues is central to all research conducted with human participants. The aim of this course is to familiarise postgraduate students with the common ethical issues in psychological research, and to support them in identifying the issues specific to their own research. This module will also assist students in completing and submitting a formal ethics proposal to the relevant ethics board(s). Please note this module consists of two half day seminars in November. Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:* Identify the key ethical issues in psychological research, * Identify the specific issues associated with their own research question, and * Prepare a formal submission for a relevant ethics board(s).

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module is structured as a series of seminars, where students are given an overview of the seminar material, being encouraged to work though the key topics with a focus on their application to their own postgraduate research. Discussion is central to supporting students to reflect on challenges and solutions and apply these issues to their own research. Students share their experience of engaging with the ethical review process with their peers.
