This module aims to introduce students to the concepts of youth mental health (YMH) through an investigation of current theory, research, and evidence-based approaches in the field. The module will also focus on frameworks, policies and service developments related to youth mental health to provide a context to the landscape of mental health service delivery. The focus will be on the mental health of young people, mainly aged between 12 and 25 years.
This module will examine priority mental health areas such as youth suicide and the role of technology in young people’s mental health. Material will be presented on innovations in youth mental health such as youth participation and community-based models of care.

Learning Outcomes:


On completion of this module, you should be able to:
• Critically evaluate the research literature on topics in youth mental health such as youth mental health service delivery.
• Reflect on issues related to policy and practice in youth mental health.
• Present on an aspect of youth mental health based on the Lancet Psychiatry Commission’s (2024) publication on youth mental health to your peers.
• Synthesize and critique current literature on youth mental health.
• Identify credible, high-quality information and justify the usefulness of selected sources by effectively sourcing and prioritizing evidence

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Teaching and Learning approaches used in this module include seminars, group work, student presentations and critical writing. In each 2 hour seminar, we spend part of the seminar engaging in some element of group work or class discussion.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Group Presentation (40%): Written feedback and the overall group grade will be provided to each group via email after the presentation has been completed and individual contribution to the work of the group considered via peer evaluation. Each student will then receive their own grade confidentially via Brightspace. Before the presentation, you will be provided with a grading rubrics to inform you how you will be marked during the presentation. Written assignment: Feedback on responses to the written assignment will be provided individually via Brightspace.
