This module is designed for students who already have knowledge of the Portuguese language and are looking to improve and develop their communication skills, being able to express themselves about different subjects in a spontaneous, very fluent and precise way. It aims to provide the communication competences for Level C1.2, taking as reference the descriptors of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

It is orientated for academically trained learners who are willing to learn a foreign language and acquire advanced command of the Portuguese language. This module's main objective is to improve students’ proficiency in a foreign language through a metacognitive approach to Portuguese language teaching and learning, and encouraging skilfully communicating and interacting in Portuguese language. In this module students are expected to reinforce their previously acquired vocabulary and to familiarise themselves with more complex grammatical structures. Also, emphasis will be placed on Lusophone culture.

In-module repeats of select component elements may be made available during this module for students.
Any in-module repeat is only available to students who have already sat and failed an in-term component; it carries a one-grade penalty; and it does not extend to orals or RDS exams.

Learning Outcomes:

On satisfactory completion of this module, students should be able to:
- understand with ease material from a wide range of spoken and written sources;
- summarise information from different spoken and written sources;
- reconstruct arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation;
- express themselves spontaneously, very fluently and precisely;
- differentiate finer shades of meaning even in more complex situations;
- maintain consistent grammatical control of complex language;
- interact with ease, picking up and using non-verbal and intonational cues;
- show a good command of idiomatic expressions and colloquialisms.

4. Timor-Leste
Topics: Diversidade linguística em Timor-Leste; léxico em tétum; aspetos da cultura timorense.

5. Cabo Verde
Topics: Diferenças entre o português europeu e o crioulo de Cabo Verde; aspetos da cultura cabo-verdiana.

6. Angola
Topics: Diferenças entre o português europeu e o português de Angola; aspetos da cultura angolana.

7. Macau
Topics: Diferenças entre o português europeu e o patoá; aspetos da cultura macaense.

8. Moçambique
Topics: A diversidade linguística; aspetos da cultura moçambicana.

9. Guiné-Bissau

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
In this module the key teaching and learning approaches used are: active/task-based learning enhanced with Brightspace Virtual Learning Environments; peer and group work and student presentations.
Students are expected to spend some hours per week working on the various course activities:
Self-study: Reading and listening to materials related to the course modules; doing tasks and a variety of exercises, including grammar;
Oral interaction in class is expected and interaction through Brightspace to solve any doubts, problems and any other issues students might have.

Formative feedback individually to students on non graded assessments at the discretion of the tutor - Students will be told what they have done well and what they need to do to improve.
