This module aims to broaden students´ understanding of the linguistic, cultural, social, and political aspects of Portugal and other Portuguese-speaking countries and their societies. Students will critically engage with a variety of written texts and audiovisual materials that will help them become more competent in contemporary Portugal and enhance their intercultural awareness.
It will also introduce students to a number of practicalities regarding living in Portugal today and will therefore be of interest to students preparing for their year abroad in Portugal as part of their degree programme.
This module will be taught and assessed in English.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
- describe and discuss key characteristics of contemporary Portugal;
- understand and analyse articles, reports and audio-visual materials on cultural, political, social and business-related topics
deploy a wide-ranging vocabulary related to these themes
- give a well-structured and coherent oral presentation on a chosen topic, and comment on other presentations
- have developed self-study skills and awareness of and sensitivity to another culture.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Interactive lectures and student-led seminars. This module requires students to take active participation in all the learning activities associated with the module, both in class and outside the class. A significant amount of work in class will be done in pairs or groups. Class activities are often based on materials (written texts and audio-visual materials) that students have to prepare before the classes. During the trimester students will work on a final project in groups that will be presented to the class.
