Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the module, students will be able to:
1) Communicate in spoken Portuguese, encompassing both productive (speaking and writing) and receptive (listening and reading) skills.
2) Understand the structure of the language and be able to master the most important grammar concepts.
3) Present information in oral Portuguese and engage in conversations relating to everyday situations in a Portuguese-speaking environment.
4) Articulate your opinions and respond to the opinions of others in discussions and engage in role-play exercises, dealing with a range of situations and scenarios (e.g. related to the year abroad).
5) Acquire and/or develop knowledge of the Portuguese-Speaking World

Indicative Module Content:

This module develops students’ linguistic skills in Portuguese, bridging the beginner and intermediate levels. It encourages meaningful and contextualised use of the Portuguese language with an emphasis on communication. Each class focuses on topics of personal and general interest, including the countries of the Portuguese-speaking world, current events and debates (e.g. ecology and sustainability, tourism, social and political issues), and artworks and artists from the Portuguese-speaking world.

UNESCO highlights a set of key competencies that support individuals in their development and support society in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). UCD has adapted these competencies and is combining them with others to form a general framework of learning competencies. This module will help you develop the competencies below to the levels specified. 

The United Nations identified seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as core to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and UCD contributes in general to SDG 4 Quality Education. Further SDGs explored within this module if relevant are listed below. A scale of 1 - 5 indicates the extent to which the SDG is covered.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:

This is a highly active/task-based module focused on communicative skills. Students will engage in collaborative activities and create authentic products designed to foster engagement, confidence and reduce apprehension in using a foreign language.
The student will acquire the language skills by creating authentic products, fostering deep engagement and functional communication skills.
Combination of homework and in-class practical tasks exploring different genres and registers (i.e. podcast, creative writing, travel guides, annotated translation, press release and/or social media post).

In-class work will include:
- Small group and partner work
- Listening comprehension
- Speaking/pronunciation exercises
- Oral presentations and debates

Students are expected to engage in self-learning activities every week, such as, reading and listening to materials relating to the course modules; completing tasks and exercises (including grammar).
Independent work outside the class will include:
- Listening to music and podcasts in Portuguese
- Watch a film and/or read a short story in Portuguese
- Review grammatical structures independently before coming to class
- Learning vocabulary

Oral interaction in class is expected.

Generative AI may be used for certain purposes only under the guidance of your module coordinator and within academic integrity guidelines.
