This module is designed for students who already have a basic knowledge of the Portuguese language and are looking to improve and develop their communication skills, being able to express themselves about different subjects in a clear, detailed and coherent way. It aims to provide the communication competences for Level B2., taking as reference the descriptors of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

It is orientated for academically trained learners who are willing to learn a foreign language and acquire upper intermediate command of the Portuguese language. This module's main objective is to improve students’ proficiency in a foreign language through a metacognitive approach to Portuguese language teaching and learning, and encouraging skilfully communicating and interacting in Portuguese language. In this module students are expected to reinforce their previously acquired vocabulary and to familiarise themselves with more complex grammatical structures. Also, emphasis will be placed on Lusophone culture.

In-module repeats of select component elements may be made available during this module for students.
Any in-module repeat is only available to students who have already sat and failed an in-term component; it carries a one-grade penalty; and it does not extend to orals or RDS exams.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Understand the main ideas of a complex speech on both concrete and abstract topics and follow extended speech and complex lines of argument provided the topic is reasonably familiar;
- Give clear developed descriptions and presentations, with appropriate highlighting of significant points;
- Use the language fluently, accurately and effectively on a wide range of general topics, marking the relationships between ideas;
- Communicate with good grammatical control, sharing ideas and build upon other’s ideas;
- Can summarise the important points made in longer, spoken and written complex texts on subjects of current interest, including his/her fields of special interest.

Indicative Module Content:

1. A língua portuguesa no mundo
Topics: Expressar julgamentos de valor; expressar uma ação hipotética, eventual ou provável no futuro; expressar dúvida; conhecer festas portuguesas.

2. Portugal: marcas, produtos e pessoas
Topics: Expressar desejo, sentimento, ordem, etc.; expressar/defender opiniões; conhecer personalidades, empresas e produtos portugueses.

3. Portugal: mais do que futebol e praia
Topics: Expressar a ideia de concessão; falar sobre sistemas de educação; reconhecer algumas marcas comerciais portuguesas; conhecer o Carnaval português.

4. Portugal: Festas, gastronomia e religião
Topics: Expressar a ideia de finalidade; expressar a condição; conhecer algumas festas populares portuguesas; relacionar a gastronomia portuguesa com a religião.

5. Arte urbana
Topics: Expressar desejo; pedir e dar instruções; conhecer aspetos da vivência dos jovens portugueses; conhecer a arte urbana lusófona.

6. A geração Z
Topics: Expressar a ideia de irrealidade, probabilidade e dúvida; conhecer algumas novas tendências na sociedade portuguesa.

7. Superstições
Topics: Expressar probabilidade e dúvida com menor grau de probabilidade de realização; expressar condição com menor grau de probabilidade de realização ou impossibilidade de concretização; conhecer algumas superstições do mundo lusófono.

8. O turismo em Portugal
Topics: Expressar a ideia de concessão, condição, finalidade e tempo com o pretérito imperfeito do conjuntivo; fazer comparações irreais; exclamar desejo de realização improvável ou impossível; conhecer alguns produtos turísticos portugueses.

9. A gastronomia e os hábitos alimentares dos portugueses
Topics: Expressar condição no futuro; conhecer a gastronomia e os hábitos alimentares dos portugueses; falar sobre alimentação saudável.

10. História de Portugal: figuras, episódios e lendas
Topics: Expressar ação num futuro eventual ou impreciso; expressar a ideia de concessão através de estruturas especiais; conhecer algumas lendas portuguesas; conhecer algumas figuras e eventos da história de Portugal

11. Como são os portugueses?
Topics: Escrever textos argumentativos; conhecer algumas das características do povo português.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
In this module the key teaching and learning approaches used are: active/task-based learning enhanced with Brightspace Virtual Learning Environments; peer and group work and student presentations.
Students are expected to spend some hours per week working on the various course activities:
Self-study: Reading and listening to materials related to the course modules; doing tasks and a variety of exercises, including grammar;
Oral interaction in class is expected and interaction through Brightspace to solve any doubts, problems and any other issues students might have.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Formative feedback individually to students on non graded assessments at the discretion of the tutor - Students will be told what they have done well and what they need to do to improve. Feedback individually to students on graded assessments - includes reminding students of what they were aiming to achieve (the learning outcomes). Feedback to the class, on activities developed in class, where appropriate - feedback given against explicit and agreed criteria for success.
