This module is designed for students who already have some knowledge of the Portuguese Language, but who wish to move beyond a basic level of competence and focus on the acquisition of the vocabulary, functions and structures necessary for everyday oral communication purposes. The objective of the module is to enable students to develop competence in a range of language tasks performed in familiar contexts. It aims to provide students with the communication competencies for Level A2, taking as reference the descriptors of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages - Companion Volume with new Descriptors.
This module is a core module for anyone wishing to take a degree in Portuguese at UCD, whether the BA, BHumanities, BAIML or BEducation with Gaeilge/Modern Languages degrees (also as part of MALI).
It is a continuation module for students who have completed Portuguese 1A.

CLASS TIMES: to accelerate your learning, you will have 3 classes per week, with two offerings:
1) Monday at 9 am; Wednesday at 9 am, and Wednesday at 10 am
2) Monday at 9 am; Wednesday at 9 am and Friday at 10 am.

It is orientated for academically trained learners who are willing to learn (a) foreign language(s) and acquire basic command of the Portuguese language through a variety of listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities.
You will also become familiar with the two standardised varieties (European and Brazilian Portuguese)
Enjoy!

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Students will explore the use of the language in a safe, supportive and inclusive learning environment. Students will experience the target language in a productive way, carefully designed to grow familiarity and confidence.
We follow an action-oriented communicative approach. The lessons include whole-class activities and active/task-based learning enhanced with Brightspace Virtual Learning Environments: online tests/quizzes, pair and small-group work, role-play, responding to short texts, listening to dialogues, and watching video clips. Grammar is introduced in context.

PLEASE NOTE that this module focuses on developing linguistic competencies so attendance in classes is extremely important, and assessment will often take place during classes.
Students are expected to spend some hours per week working on the various course activities:
Self-study (20h): Reading and listening to materials relating to the course; doing tasks and a variety of exercises, including grammar;
Oral interaction in class is expected and interaction through Brightspace to solve any doubts, problems, and any other issues students might have.
