Module Overview:
This module is designed for students who already have some knowledge of the Portuguese Language, but who wish to move beyond a basic level of competence and focus on the acquisition of the vocabulary, functions and structures necessary for everyday oral communication purposes. The objective of the module is to enable students to develop competence in a range of language tasks performed in familiar contexts. It aims to provide students with the communication competences for Level A2, taking as reference the descriptors of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages - Companion Volume with new Descriptors.

It is orientated for academically trained learners who are willing to learn (a) foreign language(s) and acquire basic command of the Portuguese language. This module's main objective is to improve students’ proficiency in a foreign language through a metacognitive approach to Portuguese Language teaching and learning, and encouraging skilfully communicating and interacting in Portuguese Language. Strong emphasis is placed on lianguage competences: grammatical accuracy, vocabulary range and control, orthographic and phonological control embedded in linguistic and social contexts. The module will also provide the opportunity to explore aspects of Portuguese culture and society.

In-module repeats of select component elements may be made available during this module for students.
Any in-module repeat is only available to students who have already sat and failed an in-term component; it carries a one-grade penalty; and it does not extend to orals or RDS exams.

Learning Outcomes:

On satisfactory completion of this module, students can:
- (Reception) understand phrases and expressions related to areas of most immediate priority (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment), provided speech is clearly and slowly articulated;
- (Production) give a simple description or presentation of people, living or working conditions, daily routines. likes/dislikes etc. as a short series of simple phrases and sentences linked into a list;
- (Interaction) interact with reasonable ease in structured situations and short conversations, provided the other person helps if necessary. Can manage simple, routine exchanges without undue effort; can ask and answer questions and exchange ideas and information on familiar topics in predictable everyday situations;
- (Mediation) play a supportive role in interaction, provided that other participants speak slowly and that one or more of them helps him/her to contribute and to express his/her suggestions. Can convey relevant information contained in clearly structured, short, simple, informational texts, provided that the texts concern concrete, familiar subjects and are formulated in simple everyday language.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
In this module the key teaching and learning approaches used are: active/task-based learning enhanced with Brightspace Virtual Learning Environments; peer and group work and student presentations.
Students are expected to spend some hours per week working on the various course activities:
Self-study: Reading and listening to materials relating to the course modules; doing tasks and a variety of exercises, including grammar;
Oral interaction in class is expected and interaction through Brightspace to solve any doubts, problems and any other issues students might have.

Students taking this module will normally have already taken either PORT10020 or LANG10670.

Formative feedback individually to students on non graded assessments at the discretion of the tutor - Students will be told what they have done well and what they need to do to improve.
