PORT10020 Portuguese Language Ia

Academic Year 2023/2024

This module is designed as an introduction to Portuguese Language and culture of the Lusophone world, the Portuguese-speaking countries. It aims to provide students with no prior knowledge of Portuguese the communication competences for Level A1, taking as reference the descriptors of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages - Companion Volume with new Descriptors.

This module is a core module for anyone wishing to take a degree in Portuguese at UCD, whether the BA, BHumanities, BAIML or BEducation with Gaeilge/Modern Languages degrees (also as part of MALI).

CLASS TIMES: to accelerate your learning as Beginners, you will have 3 classes per week: Mon 9; Wed 9 and on Fridays you should choose either 10am or 11am.

It is orientated for academically trained learners who are willing to learn (a) foreign language(s) and acquire basic command of the Portuguese language. This module's main objective is to improve students’ proficiency in a foreign language through a metacognitive approach to Portuguese Language teaching and learning, and encouraging skilfully communicating and interacting in Portuguese Language. Strong emphasis is placed on language competences: grammatical accuracy, vocabulary range and control, orthographic and phonological control embedded in social contexts.

The communicative contexts and the themes approached are related to the everyday life: myself and the others (introducing oneself, greetings, preferences, forms of politeness, basic descriptions), leisure, travel, home, invitations, family and friends, studies, shopping, environment, etc.).

Enjoy!
