POL30740 Political Economy of EU

Academic Year 2020/2021

The process of European integration began in six countries ravaged by two world wars. Keynesian macroeconomics and the cross-national cooperation between traditional centre-left and centre-right parties underpinned the project for an “ever closer union” within a “social Europe”. Can these commitments—as well as the parties that enshrined them—survive in an age of economic inequality, social polarization, and the fragmentation of political party systems?

This module will provide an overview of key issues in the political economy of the EU, emphasising their historical evolution and current status. They include:

– The history and challenges of European economic governance, emphasising the links between ideas and interests in political economy
– The relationship between change in international macroeconomic regimes and national political party systems, emphasising the crisis of European social democracy
– Challenges to the current model of EU governance, covering both left and radical right populism
– Prospects for European integration in light of the above developments

The module is taught by Mr Jorge Tamames.
