POL10120 Foundations in Global Development

Academic Year 2020/2021

This module is designed to introduce students to key themes in the foundations of global politics and development. The first section of the module explores theories (and histories) of development (and underdevelopment), including market-based approaches (free markets, free trade, etc.); approaches that emphasise the role of the state; Marxist and dependency schools; as well as feminist, environmental and post-development theories. The second section of the module explores more empirical aspects of development (and underdevelopment), such as the role of international institutions like the International Monetary Fund, as well as dimensions ranging from foreign direct investment to corruption.

This module is taught by Dr Emma Mathias.
