PLAN40140 Urban Design Studio

Academic Year 2022/2023

This module provides students with an understanding of the urban design process and key aspects of its regulatory context, within a structured, project-based learning environment. Students are introduced to core practical approaches for analysing the formal, spatial and aesthetic qualities of an urban district, the strategic role of urban design in making better places, the relationship between urban design strategy, planning policy and guidance, and site-specific design interventions.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this module, the student will have gained the following:
- sufficient understanding of urban design to converse productively with members of other professions in the field;
- experience and understanding of the design process from the analysis of a land-use brief to the completion of an urban design solution;
- an appreciation of urban context and the effects of intervention in the urban fabric;
- experience and understanding of the process of option analysis in the selection of spatial solutions;
- understanding of the relationship between planning policy, guidance, building regulations, and architecture;
- observation skills through the process of examining visual context.
