PLAN40020 Placemaking: Urban and Rural Design

The planning profession has had a longstanding interest in the design of towns and cities, and planning systems and policies have over time provided a key means to regulate, mediate and manage the design of urban as well as rural places. This module seeks primarily to introduce urban design and its relationship with spatial planning, and the key role of urban design in creating and managing urban places. Students are also introduced to rural building and site design, design in small rural towns, and to related critical debates. The module provides an overview of key concepts, theories and principles related to built form, urban space, layout, the social dimension of urban places, and to urban design more generally, and examines their relevance and application in practice. The module also explores people-place relations, particularly with respect to place distinctiveness, the intangible qualities of urban places, and appropriate means through which these characteristics and relationships can be negotiated in urban design and planning processes.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this module, the student will:
• Be aware of key concepts and theory in urban design, and the nature of the urban design process.
• Have a sufficient understanding of the typical principles and objectives of urban design to work and converse comfortably with practitioners from other related disciplinary areas towards the achievement of good urban design and spatial planning.
• Understand the relevance of people-place relations in planning and urban design, and approaches to their negotiation in urban design practice.
• Understand the relationship between form and function in the design of the built environment.
• Be able to recognise the characteristics of good urban and rural built form and space and be able to distinguish between good and poor built form and space.
• Understand the role of spatial planning in the management of urban design and design in the rural environment.
