The purpose of this module is to replicate the work of a planning practice or a research team with students working for a semester on a particular planning related issue or project. The overall project will provide students with the opportunity to interact and engage with a real-world planning issue and provide students with an opportunity to undertake independent research on a specific sub-topic of interest to them.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the module students will:
(1) Recognise the importance of undertaking research in a real-world context.
(2) Appreciate the importance and value of stakeholder engagement.
(3) Have conducted a search and critical review of academic literature on the chosen planning issue/topic/project
(4) Have conducted a search and critical policy review on the chosen planning issue/topic/project.
(5) Undertaken empirical research relevant to the chosen issue (gathered data, undertaken interviews)
(6) Have analysed the results of their research using appropriate techniques.
(7) Understand the importance of project management.
(8) Have developed communication and presentation skills.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
As the module is project based it will be focused on enquiry and problem based learning. Working as a team replicating a planning practice or research group the students will largely work independently under the direction of supervisors. There will be opportunities throughout the module to engage with practitioners and to visit relevant sites or areas associated with the project.
