This module focuses on the forces shaping urban and regional development. It examines the growth of cities, classic theories of urban structure and land use, the property development process, and the regulatory frameworks that influence development. It explores issues related to market processes and interventions, including decision-making within competitive markets and the role of regulations or interventions aimed at achieving equity and efficiency. By the end of the module, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of how economic and social considerations shape the development process. They will also develop the skills to analyze the broader urban and regional economic forces driving spatial change.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course, students should:
- Have a detailed knowledge of the origins and economic forces at work in the development of cities
- Have an understanding of the classic theories of urban structure and urban size distributions within regions
- Have an understanding of the key housing and transportation issues in urban areas and be familiar with the basic economic analysis of these issues
- Understand location and sector specific aspects of decision making in urban and regional; development markets.

Indicative Module Content:

Key topics include land rent, urban land-use patterns, infrastructure provision, local and regional governance, urban transportation, poverty and public policy, housing and housing policy, local government economics, and urban policy issues. These topics are analyzed through applied examples of urban and regional development processes in Ireland and internationally.
