This module introduces students to the basic concepts of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and how the technology is used in Urban Planning. An overview of GIS technology is provided, including data capture, analysis, and presentation within a GIS framework.
Emphasis is placed on the application of GIS technology to investigate urban planning and decision-making issues (e.g., linked to land-uses, transportation, green areas in cities, etc.). This module introduces students to utilising GIS (particularly WEB GIS) to evaluate urban planning topics and communicating the results to the wider public.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of the module students should be able to:
1. Understand fundamental concepts associated with GIS technology
2. Use a GIS software package (ArcGIS) to input, analyse and present spatial data
3. Apply GIS technology to assist in public policy and planning decisions
