This module introduces students to the real world of urban and regional planning through experiential learning. Through a combination of field work, desk-study and studio-based learning, students are shown the importance of planning in maintaining and improving our quality of life and our environment. Using Dublin as a planning laboratory, the field work will examine some of the key contemporary planning issues in the city. Urban regeneration, housing, transport, built heritage and green infrastructure, are among the many aspects of city planning that will be examined. In studio, the students are introduced to the plan making process through an examination of the County Development Plan. They are also introduced to how planning decisions are made via case studies of the development management process.
