The overall aim of this module is to stimulate the development of the students’ critical thinking vis-a-vis scientific literature, to deepen their understanding of the physiology subject in the context of biomedical research.
Students will analyse research papers covering a broad variety of conceptual and technical methodology.
This module gives special emphasis to covering topics across all phases of life, from development to death and across all organ systems.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of the module students should be able to:
● Critically analyse and discuss a scientific paper as part of a Journal club
● Write a concise and critical overview of a scientific paper
● Write a scientific abstract
● Give a presentation overviewing a scientific paper
● Identify limitations and propose alternatives to methodologies used in a research paper
● Identify and discuss ethical issues related to a research paper

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
The module is composed of 12 sessions of 100min alternating between journal club and workshops aimed at developing research communication skills (abstract writing, poster presentation...)
Students are offered online access to a selected scientific publication before the corresponding tutorial. The students will engage in a discussion and will receive feedback/feedforward during tutorials in class.
At the end of each journal club session the students submit a short report/critique related to the publication studied during the tutorial. The final sessions are dedicated to students’ presentations of a scientific publication related to their final year research project.
