PHYS30290 Cardiovascular Physiology for Engineers

The purpose of this module is to provide students with an in-depth consideration of the function of the cardiovascular system. Specifically, the physiology of the heart and vasculature will be addressed as will the mechanisms by which blood clot formation occurs when blood vessels experience damage.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to: Describe the mechanisms that regulate cardiac and vascular function; Demonstrate an understanding of how these mechanisms are utilised in the control of arterial blood pressure and flow; Demonstrate an understanding of cardiovascular compensations for haemorrhage; Describe the relationship between capillary structure and function; Describe the roles of platelets and blood clotting factors.

Indicative Module Content:

This module addresses the mechanisms by which arterial behaviour regulates local blood flow. Intrinsic and extrinsic mechanisms of the control of cardiac function will be described as will the assessment of cardiac function. Attention will be given to the movement of solutes and fluids across capillary walls, the venous system and the control of systemic arterial pressure. The consequences of, and cardiovascular responses to, haemorrhage will be discussed as will the roles of platelets and clotting factors in haemostasis. The laboratory practical class will address the ECG and assessment of autonomic control of the human cardiovascular system.

Lectures, tutorials and practical classes will run in a face to face format. Bespoke formats will be available should they be required.
Tutorials will address key topics and provide a forum for discussions and feedback on assignments.
