Curricular information is subject to change.

This module focuses on the normal functioning of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, whilst providing an introduction to the physiological mechanisms that are disrupted in frequently diagnosed diseases of the heart, vasculature and lungs. Emphasis is put on the integrated nature on the Cardiovascular and Respiratory systems, of central relevance for human health and disease.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this module, students will be able to:

- Describe the major structures and functions of the human heart, vascular system and lungs.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the physiological principles allowing normal cardiovascular and respiratory homeostasis.
- Interpret basic recordings of cardiovascular and respiratory parameters.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the influence of some example disease processes on the function of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. This learning objective is not intended for in-depth learning of cardiorespiratory pathology, which is delivered in dedicated modules at a more advanced stage in the programme.

Indicative Module Content:

- Histology of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
- The heart as a pump.
- The electrocardiogram.
- Cardio-respiratory regulation by the autonomic nervous system.
- Vascular control and blood pressure.
- Capillaries as exchange vessels.
- The pulmonary circulation.
- Gas laws and the mechanics of breathing.
- Oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange in the lungs and tissues.
- Haemoglobin and gas transport in the blood.
- Control of breathing.
