PHYC40900 Proj. Theoretical Physics

Academic Year 2022/2023

This module involves an extended original research project in theoretical physics, with topics including but not restricted to: General Relativity Theory, Theoretical Astrophysics, and Condensed Matter Theory. Based on original research articles, the student will explore a current research topic of his/her choice selected from a list proposed by the module co-ordinator, and will be supported by an appropriate supervisor. The student will summarize his/her findings in a written report and an oral presentation.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
The final-year TP projects involve working closely with a supervisor on an original research project. The module involves substantial independent study and creativity, guided by the supervisor who provides both mentorship and individual tutoring in regular face-to-face meetings. The student gains experience in research methods, presenting results of research, and writing a thesis.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Feedback is given continually by the project supervisor at regular face-to-face meetings. Feedback will be provided by the project supervisor or module coordinator after the interim presentation in January, and after the final presentation in April. The opportunity for feedback from the supervisor on a draft of the thesis should be available, provided the draft is supplied in good time before the final deadline. Feedback on the final thesis post-grading is available upon request.
