Curricular information is subject to change.

A foundation in physics required for your continued learning in medicine, biological and health sciences, both in further courses and self-directed through your medical career. This is the first of two physics modules that forms the core material for Stage 1 Medical and BHLS students.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

A foundation in physics required for your continued learning in medicine, biological and health sciences, both in further courses and self-directed through your medical career.

On completion of this module you will have a grounding in the principles of physics across 4 themes: mechanics; energy & torque; fluids & heat; sound & light.

Equips you for subsequent courses and you’ll be prepared for second trimester which covers more advanced topics in Quantum, Electricity, Magnetism and Nuclear.

Indicative Module Content:

In four themes of: 1) Mechanics; 2) Energy, Momentum and Torque; 3) Fluids and Heat; 4) Waves, Sound and Light.

Maths is core to science. We pull upon basic calculus, trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms, vectors and graphing. Check ahead of starting that you’re comfortable with this maths by going through the 'Prestart Maths' material linked from our Overview (and under Useful Docs) on Brightspace.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Independent thought and discussion are science’s most powerful tools… but only when linked.

In a hybrid structure, you work and discuss together in class and you study independently using online materials to learn and solve problems. Material is delivered in four themes, each of 3 weeks duration, containing my overview of materials, a Q&A session with me focused to your questions, tutorials focused assigned homework, and classworks with me which focus to your solving of numerical problems combined with discussion.

PDF materials are provided ahead of each theme. These materials link you to lectured videos by you clicking on emojis at the top-right of pages. You annotate the pdf materials from my overviews and by watching the lectured videos and by reading chapters I recommend from our course text.

Your labs are grounded in independent observation, which is core to science. You write up a report during each session and hand it in at the end of that session.
