Curricular information is subject to change.

This module introduces the student to physiotherapy practice in cardiorespiratory care. The module covers common pathological conditions of the paediatric and adult respiratory system and pulmonary postoperative complications. Anatomy lectures and dissection tutorials and applied physiology of the cardiorespiratory systems assures a baseline level in anatomy and physiology that will underpin the physiotherapy cardiorespiratory care learning in this module.

This module will introduce the student to cardiorespiratory physiotherapy skills in the assessment and management of adult disorders of the cardiorespiratory system adhering to infection control, safety standards and legal, ethical and practice boundaries of the physiotherapy profession. The module will include the best practice guidelines and best available evidence, clinical reasoning skills including risk analysis, an understanding of the role of the multidisciplinary team, with an emphasis on intervention and management in cardiorespiratory disease. Appropriate communication during a respiratory assessment and provision of physiotherapy treatment will also be addressed.

The module will explore the role of exercise and physical activity in the management of chronic cardiorespiratory diseases and hypertension. The module will include case-study based clinical reasoning sessions using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) as a framework to show students how to assess patients and plan treatment accordingly, use outcome measures to assess effectiveness of treatment; modify treatment where necessary and identify limits of practice and when referral to another discipline is indicated.

Mapped to CORU SoP: 1.1-1.3, 1.15, .1, 3.1-3.8, 3.10, 3.14, 5.1-5.3, 5.5-5.11, 5.14, 5.15, 5.17-5.20, 5.22, 5.23, 5.28

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should:

1. Understand the theoretical principles behind cardiorespiratory physiotherapy, based on knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
2. Understand the pathology of common obstructive and restrictive respiratory disorders.
3. Interpret basic investigations including X-rays, ABGs and pulmonary function tests
4. Demonstrate competency in physiotherapy assessments relevant to the cardiorespiratory patient including being able to perform a comprehensive subjective and objective assessment, gather all appropriate background information, be able to analyse and critically evaluate the information collected and select, justify and appropriately implement appropriate tests/assessments based upon this information.
5. Design an effective treatment plan based on assessment findings and determined problem lists and goals, risk analysis that is in line with the best available evidence.
6. Demonstrate safe and effective physiotherapy treatments for the cardiorespiratory patient treatment including exercise and mobilisation; ACBT, adjunct airway clearance techniques; positioning and non-invasive ventilation.
7. Understand and interpret relevant outcome measures for the cardiorespiratory patient, e.g., 6MWT and Chester Step Test
8. Understand safety considerations and the role of exercise and appropriate prescription in the prevention and management of chronic cardiorespiratory disease including pulmonary
rehabilitation and hypertensive patients.
9. Recognise the role of the multidisciplinary team in the collaborative care of the cardiorespiratory patient and be aware of appropriate referral to relevant
members in acute and community care settings.

Indicative Module Content:

Topics covered include:
• Anatomy of the mediastinum, heart, lungs, pleural cavity and diaphragm
• Applied cardiorespiratory physiology
• Common obstructive and restrictive respiratory pathologies including COPD, bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis, asthma, asthma, pneumonia, pulmonary fibrosis and thoracic surgeries
• Interpretation of relevant investigations of the cardiovascular, respiratory, haematological and renal systems including chest X-Rays; ABGs; bloods work including platelets and urinary output
• Safe and effective physiotherapy assessment of the respiratory patient, including observation, auscultation, chest expansion, vital signs, SpO2, oxygen therapy and interpretation of the National Early Warning Score system
• Safe and effective respiratory physiotherapy treatment techniques for the self- ventilating patient including exercise and mobilisation, ACBT, adjuncts, positioning and non-invasive ventilation. All techniques are based on international evidence-based best practice guidelines
• Safety in exercise testing and prescription for individuals with cardiorespiratory disease – pulmonary rehabilitation and exercise for hypertensive patients

UNESCO highlights a set of key competencies that support individuals in their development and support society in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). UCD has adapted these competencies and is combining them with others to form a general framework of learning competencies. This module will help you develop the competencies below to the levels specified.
Learning Competency Additional Information Level

Collaboration

The ability to learn from others; to understand and respect the needs, perspectives and actions of others (empathy); to understand, relate to and be sensitive to others (empathic leadership); to deal with conflicts in a group; and to facilitate collaborative and participatory problem solving. Competent

Critical Thinking

The ability to question norms, practices and opinions; to reflect on one’s own values, perceptions and actions. Advanced Beginner

Wellbeing

Wellbeing is having the resources and skills to meet life's challenges, including attributes such as personal development skills, resilience, stress management, strengths, lifestyle skills, nutrition, physical activity, sleep, alcohol/substance use, academic skills, time management, goal setting, interpersonal skills, group work, communication. Competent

The United Nations identified seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as core to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and UCD contributes in general to SDG 4 Quality Education. Further SDGs explored within this module if relevant are listed below. A scale of 1 - 5 indicates the extent to which the SDG is covered.
