PHTY41050 Cardiac Rehabilitation

The overall aim of this certificate is to educate HCPs and fitness professionals on the science of exercise training for clients with cardiovascular disease. Students will develop their knowledge base of anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system, understand the effects of aerobic and strength training and adaptive changes within the cardiac population and develop a clear understanding of the contraindications to exercise. They will understand the importance of risk stratification in this population and implications for practice. Students will be able to describe a patient’s journey from time of cardiac event (Phase 1) to completion of community cardiac rehabilitation (Phase 4).

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge and understanding of the cardiovascular system
2. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of cardiac pathology and the risk factors contributing to heart disease
3. Understand the contraindications to exercise training in the cardiac population
4. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of adaptive changes to exercise in the cardiac population
5. Create a safe, evidence informed structured exercise programme for the cardiac client with consideration of co-morbidities and client motivation
6. Apply learning in a practical setting (Phase 4 cardiac rehabilitation class)
