The module focuses on preparation of the student physiotherapist for the range of Professional Career Pathways as a Graduate Physiotherapist in the workplace in a range of relevant settings. The aim is to provide the final year student physiotherapist with detailed knowledge and understanding of the career pathways available to a graduate physiotherapist in Ireland and abroad and to provide them with the personal and professional specialised skills required to deal with the challenges of the workplace: self-awareness, self-care, time management, problem solving, planning, organisation, leadership, communication, working in teams, networking, entrepreneurship, innovation and business. This process will enable the student to integrate advanced knowledge of the complexity of the workplace in order to formulate and understand working and career pathways within the context of the setting [public health sector, private practice, industry, academia]. The module will also support the student to develop advanced career planning and self-directed skills in order to understand the process and preparation for all stages of the job seeking process.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should:
1. demonstrate a detailed knowledge and understanding of working, career pathways and current healthcare delivery in physiotherapy practice across a range of health settings in Ireland
2. demonstrate an understanding of the fundamentals of business and entrepreneurship for physiotherapy graduates
3, demonstrate an understanding of postgraduate study and international career planning for physiotherapy graduates
4. demonstrate a detailed knowledge and understanding of the challenges facing a new physiotherapy graduate entering the workplace and the specialised skills required to deal with such challenges
5. Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of personal values and life experience on professional practice and the skills to manage this impact appropriately
6. demonstrate an understanding of personal responsibility and professional accountability for one’s actions and to take responsibility for managing one’s own health and wellbeing in the context of fitness to practice
7. demonstrate a detailed knowledge and understanding of the range, requirements, benefits and need to provide evidence of continuing professional development to professional practice
8. demonstrate a detailed knowledge, understanding and application of the self-directed skills required for the job seeking process as a physiotherapist
9. demonstrate an understanding of the role of relationships with professional colleagues based on mutual respect and trust and the ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Active/task-based learning; interactive discussion; classroom peer and group work; In person lectures; critical writing; reflective learning; evidence and practice-based reflective learning and enquiry & problem-based learning; Presentation skills and effective teams workshop; Group student in-person oral and video presentations, etc.
