The module focuses on preparation of the student physiotherapist for Professional Practice as a Physiotherapist in the workplace in a range of relevant settings and their professional career as a physiotherapist. The aim is to provide the student physiotherapist with detailed knowledge and understanding of the career pathways available to a graduate physiotherapist in Ireland and to provide them with specialised skills required to deal with the challenges of the workplace: time management, planning, organisation, leadership, communication, service development planning, entrepreneurship and business management. This process will enable the student to integrate advanced knowledge of the complexity of the health system in order to formulate and understand professional practice and health care delivery within the context of the setting [public health service, primary and secondary care, private practice], healthcare reform and health policy documents in Ireland. The module will also provide the student with detailed theoretical and conceptual knowledge and understanding of the process of formulating a service development plan relevant to physiotherapy practice. The module will also support the student to develop advanced career planning and self-directed skills in order to understand the process and preparing for all stages of the job seeking process.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of the module the student will
1. demonstrate detailed understanding of the differences between public and private physiotherapy health services across a range of settings and have a working knowledge of partnerships
2. demonstrate an understanding of the challenges facing a new physiotherapy graduate entering the workplace and the specialised skills required to deal with such challenges.
3. demonstrate a detailed knowledge and understanding of current health care delivery and policy in Ireland.
4. demonstrate detailed theoretical and conceptual knowledge and understanding of the process of formulating a service development plan
5. demonstrate an understanding of the fundamentals of business for physiotherapy practice
6. demonstrate a detailed understanding and application of the self-directed skills required for the job seeking process as a physiotherapist
