This module is designed to integrate and advance students’ knowledge relating to specialist areas, across three broad pillars of physiotherapy practice: paediatrics, pelvic health and oncology.

Specialist topics covered include:
Paediatric physiotherapy: the role of physiotherapy in early intervention, paediatric orthopaedics, obesity, DCD and dyspraxia, intellectual disability
Pelvic health: anatomy and function of the pelvic floor, antenatal and postnatal physiotherapy, pelvic girdle pain and incontinence management.
Oncology: Survivorship (including treatments, pre-habilitation and rehabilitation, exercise prescription), lymphodema, palliative care, paediatric oncology and haematology.

Other specialist topics include occupational physiotherapy, acupuncture and burns management.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

1. Demonstrate an advanced and detailed knowledge of current physiotherapy practice in the specialties of paediatrics, pelvic health, oncology, occupational physiotherapy and burns management.
2. Demonstrate an advanced understanding of the role of the physiotherapist in these specialist areas within the multidisciplinary context in different healthcare environments.
3. Discuss and justify physiotherapy management strategies for these specialities with an emphasis on evidence based practice.
4. Review and analyze current literature in the above specialties in a self-directed and autonomous manner.

Indicative Module Content:

The module is designed to integrate and advance students’ knowledge relating to specialist areas of physiotherapy practice. Specialist topics covered include:
Paediatric physiotherapy: the role of physiotherapy in early intervention, haematology and oncology, orthopaedics, obesity, DCD and dyspraxia, intellectual disability
Pelvic health: the role of physiotherapy in antenatal and postnatal care, pelvic floor dysfunction, pelvic girdle pain and incontinence management.
Oncology: Survivorship (including treatments, pre-habilitation and rehabilitation, exercise prescription), lymphodema, palliative care
Burns and wound care: the role of physiotherapy in wound management, burns
Occupational physiotherapy and ergonomics.
Acupuncture.
