5 weeks of Practice Education Placement

Indicative Module Description:
This module for Professional Masters of Physiotherapy students comprises of small group teaching in the clinical setting and direct clinical patient management. Students will work in the Irish Health Service in a wide variety of settings including hospitals, primary, community and continuing care, under the direction of a practice educator and/or practice tutor.
Practice may include face to face patient contact as well as telehealth interventions. Students are required to practice within the legal and ethical boundaries of the physiotherapy profession, complying with the CORU Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics. Students must attend clinical placement fit to practice and understand their responsibility to service users by informing educator/tutor/School of Physiotherapy of health issues that may affect clinical competence.
Students will have an opportunity to integrate practice and apply theory and clinical skills learned in previous academic modules to facilitate the students development of the CORU Standards of Profiency. Students will be guided to perform patient assessments and treatments in line with relevant Health & Safety policies. Students will be supported in developing effective communication skills to ensure high quality service delivery for service users. Each student will complete a ‘Physiotherapy Learning Portfolio’ during the practice edcuation placement.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should:
1. Achieve the competencies set out in the Clinical Placement Assessment Form, Level 1
2. Formulate and evaluate learning objectives and operate within a professional clinical environment.
3. Understand the importance of informed consent and demonstrate ability to gain informed consent prior to service user
assessments and treatments.
4. Show development of clinical assessment, planning and treatment skills.
5. Show development of professional behaviours and responsibilities and demonstrate personal responsibility for student’s own learning and professional practice.
6. Ensure patient confidentiality is maintained always maintained.
7. Demonstrate appropriate and effective verbal and written communication skills such as providing patients with clear advice/instruction, participating in multidisciplinary patient management and ensuring accurate documentation of physiotherapy assessment and treatment in patient records.
8. Demonstrate regular use of outcome measures and evaluation of the efficacy of treatment interventions.
9. Engage in reflection and evaluation of practice


Indicative Module Content:

Clinical practice on placement varies depending on the specialties available on site.
Clinical practice assessment is determined by the Clinical Placement Assessment Form under the 5 headings - Patient assessment, Treatment & Management, Professionalism, Communication and Documentation.
The portfolio includes the reflective essay, the evidence based clinical reasoning form, placement objectives, planned and unplanned learning, evidence of manual & patient handling techniques and the clinical log.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Throughout the practice placement teaching and learning occurs on the clinical site with face to face patient interactions and inter-professional interactions with Physiotherapists and other members of the multi-disciplinary team. Teaching may occur one to one or in groups. Evidence informed case based discussions, tutorials, peer learning and presentations are often used as methods of teaching and learning.
The Physiotherapy Learning Portfolio provides the opportunity for students to submit written reflection on their placement and the evidence based clinical reasoning form affords students the opportunity to demonstrate their problem solving approach to clinical decision making through the application of evidence based practice on a specific patient encounter.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Clinical practice feedback will be given on site by the practice supervisor. Portfolio feedback will be given on submission in the assignment section on Brightspace. Face to face feedback can be requested by student.
