PHTY30160 Sports Physiotherapy

Academic Year 2022/2023

This module will enable the student to develop an understanding of the role of the physiotherapist in the sports setting. It will advance the previous knowledge and use of evidence practice in sports/function specific exercise, soft tissue and joint treatment in relation to different injury stages. This module also provides a basis for the assessment of foot and ankle pathomechanics and for experience in various taping techniques. Students will learn the how to work within a sports team setting.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module students should be able to: 1. Demonstrate a good knowledge of the role of the physiotherapist in sports. 2. Be able to develop, design and evaluate a progressive sports/function specific exercise program respecting the different stages of inflammation and healing. 3. Demonstrate a practical knowledge of taping and soft tissue mobilisation. 4. Demonstrate an understanding of assessment and management of foot and ankle pathomechanics 5. Know indications/contraindications and have a practical knowledge of spinal manipulation

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module is made up of a mixed teaching and learning approach including face to face lectures, case scenarios, clinical reasoning video session, practical skills and group/peer feedback and review sessions.
