PHTY20140 Physiotherapy Professional Practice II

Academic Year 2022/2023

Professional Practice 2 further develops the skills, attributes and competencies introduced in Professional Practice 1. It develops students’ communication skills introducing the concept of inter professional communication. Students will explore and develop their understanding of professionalism, identity, equality, diversity, and inclusion. Students will develop an understanding of the importance of documentation, clinical reasoning, and evidence-based practice. Health beliefs, cultural competence, and self-care will be explored. Students will develop an understanding of the patients’ perspective of health care delivery. In preparation for clinical practice normal gait and mobility skills are introduced in a practical setting. Two weeks clinical practice is an important learning opportunity within this module and will take place if the health situation permits.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students will be able to:
1. Understand the key attributes of good communication.
2. Understand the key attributes of inter-professional communication.
3. Understand the implications of their own perceptions of professionalism, identity, equality, diversity, and inclusion.
4. Develop and understanding of the role of documentation.
5. Develop further their clinical reasoning skills.

7. Effectively source relevant information through enhancing their information literacy skills.
8. Recognise the importance of practising in a non discriminatory, culturally sensitive

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
The module will be composed of lectures and small group sessions. There will be one practical face to face session. The students will undertake two weeks of clinical placement within this module if the health situation permits.

Learning Requirements:

This is a core module of the BSc Physiotherapy Programme since there are two weeks clinical education associated with this module students from other programmes are not permitted to take this module.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Students undertake practical learning as part of this module and receive formative feedback during these sessions. During their 2 week clinical placement students work closely with their clinical tutor and educators and receive regular feedback. As part of the clinical assessment process tutors are required to give students mid-point formative feedback on their progress. Face to face feedback is provided at the end of the placement by the clinical tutors. Feedback is available to all students following assessment of their reflective portfolios.
