PHTY20090 Introduction to Massage

Academic Year 2022/2023

This is an elective module for all students with an interest in general wellness massage, sports massage and basic human anatomy. This will mainly be a small group teaching based module. It focuses on two main areas (i) the basic principles and application of a range of general soft tissue massage techniques (ii) the basic principles and application of a range of soft tissue massage techniques relating to sport. Students will be introduced to basic functional anatomy in preparation for an improved understanding of wellness massage.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should:


1. Have an understanding of the physical and psychological effects of wellness massage.


2. Have a basic knowledge of functional anatomy related to wellness massage


3. Have an understanding of the effects of wellness massage on the various systems in the body: nervous, skeletal, digestive, respiratory


4. Be able to explain the indications and contraindications to wellness massage techniques to ensure persons safety at all times


5. Be able to design an overall safe treatment plan for the person: be aware of ethical requirements and obtain informed consent, be able to select and safely perform appropriate techniques for a soft tissue wellness massage, be able to modify the treatment as appropriate, and reassess following treatment


6. Demonstrate professional behaviour in relation to massage within the scope of the module including communicating with the person, interpreting what they are saying, and at all times recognising cultural and linguistic diversity

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module includes both lectures and weekly practical classes. A range of wellness massage techniques are taught through demonstration with the students then practicing the techniques with on-going feedback given from the class tutor
