In this module students will further develop the skills, attributes and competencies introduced in Foundations of Healthcare Practice 1.
Students will gain an understanding of Physiotherapy services available within our largest clinical partner site, The Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, with teaching taking place within this hospital over a number of weeks. Students will learn about the variety of services available in the hospital including the clinical areas of musculoskeletal, neurology / rehabilitation and cardiorespiratory. Students will also be introduced to the Multidisciplinary team, and the role of the Physiotherapist within the team. Furthermore, students will be introduced to the importance of interprofessional communication in environments that are built upon respect and trust, along with learning about the limits of practice, and understanding when to ask for advice or when additional expertise is warranted.

Students will be provided with an introduction to non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular and pulmonary disease, obesity and diabetes mellitus. The prevalence and contributory factors for NCDs will be covered, along with the important role the physiotherapist plays in both the prevention and management strategies for NCDs. The importance of physiotherapists as health advocates are taught in this module, as the basic concepts and principles of health promotion across the lifespan are covered, providing the student with the ability to understand the planning, implementation and evaluation of different health promotion approaches at different stages of life.

Dignity and respect and its importance to the service-user, with due consideration of their will and preference at all times will also be explored. Workshops on both dignity and respect and digital literacy skills will be conducted in this module. Students will be provided with the basics digital literacy skills, including how to navigate the online library, undertake simple searches and access the electronic databases.
